El Escocés Volante La Multa Old Vine Garnacha (£9.99, 15%) This stunning Spanish red from the slopes of the Ribota Valley in Aragon is fairly bursting with flavour. Red fruits dominate for a full-bodied finish with a distinctive violet aroma. Worth every penny. Available from Home Tipple.

2 Torres Sangre de Toro, 2019 (£7.50, 13.5%)

Another very tasty Spanish red (blended with carinena grapes). Perhaps not quite as explosive as La Multa, above, if a little lighter on the pocket. This is a classic supermarket wine, great value and very decent taste and aroma. Available from Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s.

3 Grenache Blanc, Pays d’Oc, Domaine du Bosc 2020 (£6.75, 13.5%)

Slightly softer on the palate, this French white is something of a bargain. Flavours of citrus and herbs bring the Mediterranean to your glass. Available from Wine Society. 4

This stunning rosé (85 per cent garnacha and 15 per cent viura) is a lovely salmon colour, its delicate shade belying the confident, fresh flavours of watermelon and pear combined with red fruit aromas (think strawberry) when the cap comes off Worth the slightly higher price. Available from The Great Wine Co.

Rioja Rosado, Ramón Bilbao 2020 (£10.95, 12.5%) 5 Viña Zorzal Garnacha Rosado, Navarra 2020 (£8.25, 13.5%)

Another super Spanish rosé, on the dry side for a garnacha, with lovely floral notes and an elegant finish. Excellent value. Available from The Wine Society.

6 Chapoutier Côtesdu-Rhône Villages (£9, 14.5%)

This French grenache (blended with shiraz) bursts with colour, flavour and aroma. Perhaps a little more acidity than you might expect, but fabulously fruity and full-bodied on the palate. Available from Tesco.
