We can’t afford to totally abandon the Afghan people

-

HERE is the really big problem we are facing today: we walked out of Afghanistan and left people in the clutches of Islamist extremists. And now, apparently, we’re even thinking of having discussions with them.

Forget the Americans: they’re no longer interested in the rest of the world. But we have done the most stupid thing. We want to control those people coming into this country, and quite rightly so, but how can we do that when we’re not protecting their homeland?

Ordinary Afghan people were getting on with life. There was fun, there was music and even girls were getting an education. Women were getting jobs in high places. But we didn’t see how that was threatened. Surely we now need to consider the stability of this country and the rest of the world.

If America has given up we’re going to have to go back to Afghanistan sooner rather than later. Otherwise, I’m afraid the last 20 years was a complete waste and friends of mine who served in the military are extremely upset. As I think are most decent people.

WATCHING some of my favourite parliamentary debates on TV recently made me wonder why the people of Scotland are so keen on the SNP, fronted by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, right.

Her SNP colleagues who sit in the Westminster Parliament don’t seem at all interested in any of the subjects that we, the people of Britain, are worried about and all they seem to want is to take Scotland down a path to real austerity.

I know from my radio show that lots of our Scottish listeners want to continue to be part of the UK – and why wouldn’t you? – but what I don’t get is how the SNP MPs and MSPs keep getting voted in.

If Scotland was to go it alone they wouldn’t be able to. There is no economy without the help of the rest of the UK so why are they trying to break something that doesn’t need to be broken?

I WAS invited to the opening of a new theatre last weekend, not something that happens very often these days, in Esher, Surrey.

It was great. My old friend Leee John and his band Imagination were top of the bill. The place was packed and what a wonderful feeling to hear live music and see people enjoying themselves. Long may this freedom continue.
