WERE THE BAY CITY ROLLERS THE BEST BAND OF THE 1970s?

- Exeter

IWAS gutted when I read of the death of the Bay City Rollers’ Les McKeown. They were my favourite band when I was growing up (“Roller Les killed by drink and drug use”, September 10).

I bought all their records and went to see them in concert. The fans were a bit wild but I just loved the whole experience.

They sold 120 million records in their career and in the mid-70s you couldn’t switch on the TV or read a magazine without seeing their faces. God bless, Les. You were a true great.

THE Bay City Rollers certainly sold a lot of records and played many sell-out gigs to excitable teenagers but they were just one of many great acts in what was a golden age of pop and rock music.

David Bowie was at the peak of his powers, Led Zeppelin and Pink

Floyd were releasing monumental albums, Elton John’s music was just golden and Abba were an absolute global phenomenon.

The Rollers recorded some memorable pop songs and their legacy will never be forgotten but I was never a big fan.
