Leigh find the way to answer owner Beaumont’s broadside

- By Trevor Baxter

KURT HAGGERTY praised Leigh’s “fantastic effort” as his team responded to an astonishing attack by owner Derek Beaumont.

Writing in the club programme, Beaumont accused Haggerty’s squad of lacking belief and desire when losing 44-6 to Hull KR.

He said: “Do I care what response I get as a result of them reading this? Not at all as they can decide what history they want to be part of and how they represent themselves.”

But Leigh answered by securing only their second Super League win of the year.

Haggerty said: “You can take that one of two ways. It can fire you up or go the other way. There’s no hiding that in some games we haven’t competed well enough.

“But I don’t really want to talk about it, I just want to talk about us winning the game.

“We have spoken about being resilient and sticking in there when results don’t go our way.

They did that and I am proud of them.”

Full-back Ryan Brierley scored a hat-trick, including a 200th career try, and kicked three goals as Leigh led 10-0, trailed 18-10 but plundered 16 unanswered points.

They also finished with 11 men after yellow cards for Brierley and Rob Butler.

Wakefield interim bossWillie Poching, beaten for only the second time in his six games, said: “I didn’t see this coming. Our attitude was poor, especially defensively.”
