Scott and Obiri run up Great North wins

-

MARC SCOTT and Hellen Obiri took the honours as a revamped Great North Run celebrated its 40th race.

Postponed in 2020 due to coronavirus, the half-marathon returned in Newcastle yesterday but on an adapted route, starting and finishing in the city as opposed to its traditional ending in South Shields.

Scott took 61 minutes and 22 seconds to claim the overall title, which has been won by Mo Farah on the past six occasions,

while Obiri’s 67min 42sec was enough to take the women’s race.

Scott was followed by Ed Cheserek (61:31) and Galen Rupp (61:52), while Eilish McColgan was second in the women’s race in 67:48, shining in an event her mother, Liz, won three times in the Nineties.

Sean Frame won the men’s wheelchair race and Shelly Woods took her seventh success in the women’s race.
