1845: The world’s first baseball club, the Knickerboc­ker Club of New York, was formed.

1970: Australian Margaret Court, right, won the US Open to become only the second woman after Maureen Connolly to complete tennis’s Grand Slam. 1983: Lancashire’s Steven O’Shaughness­y scored 100 runs in 35 minutes against Leicesters­hire at Old Trafford – one of the fastest centuries ever in first-class cricket. 2007: McLaren were fined £49.2million and stripped of their points in the constructo­rs’ championsh­ip as a result of an F1 spy scandal. But drivers Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso were not docked points.
