COLWILL SERVES HIS OWN SHOCK

Emma inspires Rubin’s rally

- Ian Baker

RUBIN COLWILL was inspired by Emma Raducanu’s heroics to become the latest teenager to star on the sporting stage.

The Cardiff midfielder, 19, scored the first goals of his senior career to turn things around for the Bluebirds and crank up the pressure on Nottingham Forest manager Chris Hughton.

The Wales international cancelled out Lewis Grabban’s opener just 53 seconds after coming on in the 57th minute.

And for good measure he then hit a wonderful winner 15 minutes later.

Colwill, who joined Cardiff’s academy aged eight, said: “I love my tennis and the boys were all talking about it.

“I got plenty of inspiration from her. When you see other people who are young doing well in other sports, it inspires you.

“If you are young and inexperienced it is good to see others do it. If you are young you have no fear and can try things and hope they come off.

“This is something I’ve wanted since I started playing.”

Manager Mick McCarthy said: “He is a lovely, laidback young man and wants to work hard.”

Cardiff were always the better side and should have taken a first-half lead when Joe Worrall’s hopeless clearance fell to Joel Bagan, who headed onto the bar.

But the hosts were ahead in the 23rd minute as Max Lowe hurtled down the left and crossed for Grabban, who buried it via a deflection. Forest, though, were shocking in the second half and

Colwill was in the right place to put his side ahead from Will Vaulks’ cross.

They dominated after that, with Mark Harris missing a sitter, Kieffer Moore heading against the post and Brice Samba denying Aden Flint. Colwill grabbed the winner with a fine left-foot finish.

Bottom club Forest have just a point from their first six games, and manager Chris Hughton’s position is under immense scrutiny.

Hughton said: “I have to be confident that I can turn this around, it’s my responsibility.”
