McCANN HAS FAITH IN KIDS 3PM

V

- HULL MIDDLESBROUGH By Simon Bird

GRANT McCANN has pleaded for patience in his young squad as the problems mount up for Hull.

City revealed a loss of £8.15million in accounts published yesterday, while the Championship new boys have also registered six defeats in the past nine winless games.

Despite more than halving the wage bill, Hull suffered their big loss because turnover nosedived, with relegation in 2020 playing a huge part.

The manager knows his side must stay in the second tier to earn up to £6m extra TV income compared with League One.

McCann said: “The fans see we’ve got a young team. Some of them are learning on the job given that it’s their first experience of playing in the Championship – they are only going to get better from it.

“There’s one way to go and that’s up. I believe that’s going to happen.

“The fans have been great and the more they stick with the players, I think we’ll see the fruits of it. Boro can beat anyone in this division. They’re an experienced team. They beat Sheffield United this week, who were one of the form teams.

“It’s going to be tough, but we’re at home and want to finish this spell of games that we’ve had with a win.”

McCann is a fan of Boro boss Neil Warnock, adding: “He’s a very experienced manager and has done an incredible job wherever he’s been.”

Hull midfielder Andy Cannon, who made his first start as they came from behind on Tuesday to draw with Blackpool, said: “We’ve got to go out there and work our nuts off.

“We’ve got to get something from the game. We’ve got to stick with each other, no matter what.”

Warnock has backed Duncan Watmore to continue his scoring form.

The striker finally broke his duck for the campaign in Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Sheffield United.

Warnock said: “He is a gem of a lad. A top player and person, incredibly humble, but he hasn’t had a good start to the season.

“He never deserved his place really. It is only the last two weeks in training when he has come back to how he was last year.

“When he is like that in training you have to pick him, as simple as that. He knows he has not been the same He’s had one or two little problems and hopefully he has turned the corner. You won’t get a more genuine lad.”
