Commons invader Tasered by police

- By John Twomey

POLICE Tasered a man after he breached security at the Houses of Parliament yesterday.

Dramatic footage showed the suspect being pinned to the ground as an armed officer points a gun at him.

He was being questioned last night but Scotland Yard said the incident was not being treated as terrorism-related.

The speedy response from police and security was praised by witnesses after the man rushed into New Palace Yard via the Carriage Gates around

3pm. He was caught close to the spot hero PC Keith Palmer was stabbed to death by terrorist Khalid Masood in 2017.

Elliot Keck, who works in the office of Tory MP Andrew Rosindell, said it appeared the man scaled a fence before he was tackled. Mr Keck, 27, said: “As he was being Tasered two armed police had their guns drawn. When it was established he wasn’t a threat armed police moved off and he was sat upright before being taken to the van.”

Mr Keck said the man had discarded a bag which was searched by police. The response was “very, very impressive,” he added.

Scotland Yard said: “At around 3pm on Wednesday a man was detained and arrested at Carriage Gates inside the Palace of Westminster on suspicion of trespassing on a protected site. Inquiries continue.

“This is not being treated as a terrorist incident.”

Meanwhile, a police officer was sprayed in the face with an unknown substance near Parliament.

A helicopter was last night being used to hunt for the suspect. The attack happened at 8pm at the Palace of Westminster in Millbank.

The officer suffered mild irritation to his face but did not need hospital treatment.
