ALL’S NOT WEL

Foxes booed after Danny‘s late equaliser

- By James Nursey

LEICESTER were booed off at home for the second time in five days.

But at least this time they avoided the ignominy of throwing away another lead late on to lose.

Tottenham’s comeback to win 3-2 here after trailing in the 94th minute set a Premier League record that is unlikely to be eclipsed soon.

But Leicester’s defensive fragilities are all too clear this season after Danny Welbeck’s late header cancelled out Patson Daka’s opener.

Perhaps it should have been expected as Brighton have now scored in the last 10 minutes in five of their past nine league games. And it will have cheered boss Graham Potter and his assistant Billy Reid, who are isolating after testing positive for Covid.

It was no less than Brighton deserved after bringing on striker Welbeck and Tariq Lamptey to change the game.

The hosts switched to a back four after their collapse against Tottenham at home in midweek in a bid to improve defensively.

Daniel Amartey came back into the back four after Ghana’s elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations and defender James Justin made his first start in nearly a year after a serious knee injury as part of three changes.

Leicester created the better chances in the first half and Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was finally beaten a minute after the interval.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall headed Adam Webster’s pass back into danger for James Maddison to swap passes with Ademola Lookman on the edge of the box. Maddison then stabbed goalwards, only for Sanchez to save Harvey Barnes’ initial effort before being beaten at his near post by Daka’s low finish.

But Brighton soon threw on Welbeck and Lamptey to try and force a way into the contest and they made their presence felt. Lamptey picked out Welbeck at the near post but Kasper Schmeichel foiled him. But Welbeck was not to be denied eight minutes from time after another dangerous move down the right involving Lamptey.

This time Neal Maupay swung over the cross and Welbeck’s header crept inside the back post for his third this season. Brighton finished strongly, with defender Dan Burn having a header cleared off the line by Youri Tielemans.

Leicester’s Daka hobbled off late adding to their woes.
