MILLIONS of nature lovers have been invited to join the world’s biggest garden wildlife survey.

They can help create a snapshot of the state of birdlife across the UK by counting feathery visitors in their gardens.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds’ Big Garden Birdwatch starts today and runs until Sunday.

The survey often attracts almost a million participants who spend an hour counting the birds that visit their garden.

More than half of people the UK feed birds each year.

Beccy Speight, chief executive of the RSPB, said: “We know that for many people, garden birds provide an important connection to the wider natural world and bring enormous joy.

“By taking part in the Birdwatch, you are helping to build an annual snapshot of how our birdlife is doing across the UK.

“It is only by us understanding how our wildlife is faring that we can protect it. We know that nature is in crisis but together we can take action to solve the problems.”

Ms Speight called on the nation to provide the best environment for birds at a time when some are under threat.

She said: “Over the last year, there has been a broad and much-needed realisation that nature is an important part of our lives – especially for our mental health and wellbeing.

“But nature needs us too and we want to help make sure that people are providing the best offering they can for birds at a time when many species are in decline.”

The Daily Express Green Britain Needs You campaign has called for everyone to do their bit for the planet.

To take part in this weekend’s survey, watch birds in your garden or local green space for one hour at some point over the three days, and only count the birds that land.

Record the highest number of each bird species seen at any one time – not the total you see in the hour. When you have recorded the birds that make a visit, submit the results online.
