Our kids are the real deal says Maguire
HARRY MAGUIRE has backed Manchester United’s youngsters to seize their chance to become established first-team stars.
Anthony Elanga is the latest academy prospect to make the first team, joining Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay and Mason Greenwood.
All have the potential to become mainstays for years to come, according to skipper Maguire, who reserved special praise for winger Elanga, 19.
“That’s what this club has been about for numerous years now,” said Maguire. “We bring through young talent and people get opportunities.
“Anthony has broken into the team in the last couple of games. He’s done really well and should be proud of himself.
“If you’re talented enough, you’ll get an opportunity to play and that’s what happened with Anthony.”
Maguire said he recognises the need to pass on his wisdom and experience to the next generation, revealing he has helped mentor Greenwood since he made the first team.
“Over the last few years, with Mason, I’ve spoken with him a lot,” said the 28-year-old.
“He’s matured a lot off the pitch and you can see that on it with his performances.
“I’m the captain and when players make their debuts I feel a big responsibility to help them and speak with them.
“We expect them to work hard, to get stuck in, not be afraid and to play with no fear.”
