EXETER CHIEFS are to ditch their Native American logo after complaints from indigenous groups in the United States.

The Premiershi­p club will replace the headdress image, above, on July 1 with a helmeted warrior depicting the Dumnonii tribe who lived in the area 2,000 years ago, following the protests over cultural appropriat­ion.

However, Exeter have stopped short of following the likes of American Football team Washington Redskins – now known as just Washington – with a name change.

Exeter chairman Tony Rowe said: “There’s no reason whatsoever why we should change the name Chiefs. It’s used as a slang word for the boss and Exeter rugby are the chiefs of Devon.
