Next United boss must end trophy drought
MANCHESTER UNITED football director John Murtough says the club’s next permanent boss must set his sights on bringing the biggest trophies back to Old Trafford.
The club are set to appoint a successor to interim manager Ralf Rangnick in June with PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax’s Erik ten Hag leading their hitlist.
Whoever comes in will be told to aim at bringing glory back to the club after approaching five years without silverware. “In the Premier
League we have seen some improved results under interim manager Ralf Rangnick after a run in October and early November period that had seen the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager,” said Murtough.
“We know that consistency is the key for the club as we strive to achieve a top-four finish this season. I want to reiterate, however, that this is not the ultimate objective for Manchester United and everyone at the club is focused on challenging for the top trophies.
“We are conducting a thorough process for the appointment of a new permanent manager who will take charge this summer with the objective to get us back to challenging for those domestic and European titles.”
United have not won a trophy since lifting the Europa League crown in 2017 under
Jose Mourinho and are in danger of ending up in that competition again next season by missing out on the top four in the Premier League. However, Rangnick’s Red Devils do remain in the hunt for the Champions League this season with a 1-1 scoreline from the last 16 first leg against Atletico Madrid ahead of the return at Old Trafford in two weeks’ time.
