‘Some male MPs act like animals’
THE Attorney General yesterday said Parliament was being brought into disrepute by a group of male MPs “who behave like animals”.
Suella Braverman hit out while speaking about the claims that a Tory MP watched pornography on his phone while he was in the Commons.
The minister said there is a “very small minority of men...who fall short”. She added: “There are some bad apples who are out of order – who behave like animals and are bringing Parliament into disrepute.”
And she told BBC Radio 4’sWoman’s Hour: “I keep running through my mind how and why someone would be so brazen… so reckless, so stupid, so appallingly badly behaved to be watching porn in the workplace.”
Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said the MP concerned should be expelled from his party – and the “poisonous” culture in the Commons must change.
He told Sky News: “This is a problem...about the overall culture of the House of Commons. It is late-sitting, long nights with bars, and that very often leads – and has done for decades – to behavioural challenges.”
The grim behaviour of the Tory MP came to light when two female Conservatives reported it during a meeting at Westminster on Tuesday.
Boris Johnson yesterday branded it “unacceptable”, adding: “The proper procedures need to be gone through.”
The case will be examined by
Parliament’s Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme and could lead to the MP being expelled.
The porn claims follow reports that 56 MPs are facing allegations of sexual misconduct. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer urged the Tories to act now, rather than wait for the complaints process to conclude. But his
party is also embroiled in sleaze. A Welsh politician has claimed a Shadow Cabinet member told her women MPs were a “secret weapon” as men wanted to sleep with them.
Meanwhile, Mr Wallace said police should fully investigate claims Sir Keir broke lockdown rules after he was pictured with a beer in an MP’s office.
