Tiny bird gives us one humdinger of a photo

- By Steph Spyro

YOU would be forgiven for thinking this hummingbird is in the middle of a shower of diamonds.

In fact, they are not precious gems but microscopic droplets of water as it shakes itself after drinking from a fountain.

The tiny bird was quenching its thirst when it got caught in the spray and had to flap its wings to dry itself.

Photographer Xiaojian Huang, 65, watched this unfold in his back garden in Fremont, California.

The retired company director said: “The bird in this photo is a female Anna’s hummingbird.

“They come to drink directly from the water in the fountain or from the drops and then fly off.

“The hummingbirds hover in the air away from the water, then rush to the drops for one sip and fly backwards, then go to the drops again.

“They seem happy when they play with water. The drops can almost look like pearls or crystals, depending on the background and sunlight.”
