Murray says he can’t put pedal to the metal

- By Matthew Dunn

ANDY MURRAY has told his team he will not look beyond August when they sit down this weekend to discuss his next moves.

After the two-time Wimbledon champion went out to big-hitting American John Isner in the second round, he said: “It’s impossible to make long-term plans with a metal hip”.

As a result, all his focus will be on the US Open and the 35-yearold Scot looks set to put in the miles in an attempt to crack the top 30 before the tournament starts at the end of August. Murray may head straight to Newport, Rhode Island on July 11 for the final grasscourt event of the season.

The hardcourts of Washington could also be on his hit-list as well as the two highest-ranking ATP 1000 events in Montreal and Cincinnati.

With Wimbledon stripped of ranking points, Murray will start next week ranked 52nd, needing to climb 20 places to be seeded at Flushing Meadow. But it is now a case of whether the veteran’s body can hold out.

He added: “Providing my body holds up I’ll compete as long as I feel like I can compete at the highest level against the best players.

“But it’s impossible to make long-term plans when you have a metal hip.

“Little problems crop up regularly now, which, when you are in your early or mid-20s, that’s not really the case.”
