Serve up an ace lawn
IT’S the second week of theWimbledon Championships and we’re all wondering how the grass will ever recover after the battering it’s taken.TheAll England Lawn Tennis Club’s secret is that the tennis courts are re-laid every September, but we can learn from other expert tricks. Mowing little and often, keeping the blades high rather than scalping the grass, will encourage strong growth and prevent patchiness.A neat lawn, says Chris Bonnett of GardeningExpress.co.uk, “will instantly make your garden look more put together”.
He adds: “After mowing, treat your lawn with some liquid lawn feed to promote strong healthy growth.”
Having the right tools for the job will help and there’s an increasing choice of lawn mowers on the market, ranging from ride-on lawn tractor mowers for giant gardens to time-saving robotic mowers and easy-store machines for smaller gardens.
Lawnmowers are increasingly batterypowered too, without the need for petrol or long electricity leads, which makes them more environmentally friendly and safer.
Even the massive STIGA Series 7 Tornado lawn tractor can cut 7,500 square metres on a single charge of its battery – and the battery can also be used for other STIGA motorised gardening tools.
Similarly, eight brands are now compatible with Bosch 18V Power For All batteries, including Flymo lawnmowers and its UltraStore rotary lawnmower.
For awkward areas, perhaps around a stepping stone garden path or near walls, use a cordless trimmer such as Bosch’s EasyGrassCut or Stihl’s FSA 57 cordless grass trimmer.
