Majestic by name... and by nature

- by Matt Nixson

EVERYONE knows the High Street is a brutal place. Dozens of established chains have disappeared, including several wine-sellers. Others are pale imitations of their former selves. But it’s not all been bad news, independent shops in many areas have thrived.

The growth of Majestic Wine, however, remains something to celebrate for wine lovers. Comfortably the UK’s biggest specialist bricks and mortar retailer with 202 stores and 1,300 staff, it’s both dependable and ambitious. You can walk into any of its stores and enjoy great advice, a terrific selection and interesting wines at competitive prices.

Even though it was only founded in 1980, the chain feels a bit like it’s been around forever such is its status. But since being acquired by Fortress Investment Group three years ago, Majestic has refocused on High Street shoppers, offering a better, more varied range than supermarkets at similar prices, especially if you’re buying a mixed case.

CEO John Colley tells me: “Our buyers look for wines that represent real value, stocking a vast range that are new or unusual, ranging from bespoke family run businesses to big names. For example, Greek wine is having a moment and our superb Xinomavro is a brilliant find – it’s flying at the moment. And 2022 is shaping up as a year of fizz; some of our English wines are showing a fantastic future.”

John also pays tribute to the chain’s well-informed retail staff. “It’s a real advantage to have experts face-to-face with customers. We like to be approachable, so even if you feel a bit overwhelmed give us a try,” he says.

“Whether your budget is £5 or £500, a single bottle or the event of your life, we cater for all.”
