This is on the drier side but don’t be put off. A fabulously aromatic nose of flowers, peach and apricot sets off a delicious red berry flavour on the palate with a tingly acidic finish. Available from The Co-op.
2 Campo Viejo White Rioja (£8, 12.5%)
Viura and tempranillo blanco grapes promise a fruity, crisp white wine. If you’re new to white Riojas, you’re in good hands with leading producer Campo Viejo. A fruity, balanced palate with just enough acidity. Available from Sainsbury’s.
3 Beronia Crianza 2019 (£11.99 13.5%)
Fabulously full bodied with a long, satisfying finish, this crianza offers delicious aromas of cherries and raspberry on the nose with ripe red berries and a hint of spice on the palate. Available from Waitrose, Ocado and Majestic.
4 Ramón Bilbao ‘Selección Especial’ 2019 (£9.99, 14%)
An award-winning red simply singing with blackberry and cherry flavours with a rich, satisfying base of oak, vanilla and spice. Available from Majestic.
5 The Society’s White Rioja 2020 (£8.95, 12.5%)
This is a fine place to start if you’d like to experiment with a white Rioja. Apples and pears on the nose, with a super creamy finish and just a touch of citrus. Available from The Wine Society.
6 Lopez de Haro Rosé 2020/21 (£10.99, 13%)
This delicious rosé – a blend of garnacha and viura grapes – is bursting with red berries, floral aromas and a hint of tropical fruits. Incredibly, Lopez de Haro’s land has been used to make wine for 2,000 years. Time definitely tells. Available from Majestic.
