- By Chris Riches

MANCHESTER United and England footballer Mason Greenwood is likely to spend at least a month in custody after appearing in court accused of attempted rape.

The striker, 21, who has played once for Gareth Southgate’s senior national side, was taken into custody last weekend when charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault.

Yesterday he appeared in the dock at Manchester magistrates court.Watching proceedings were his family.

District Judge Mark Hadfield denied Greenwood bail and ordered he be remanded into custody until his next hearing, at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court on November 21.

His legal team said they will submit a new bail application. The player was first arrested by Greater Manchester Police in January over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online.

Terminated

Within hours, Greenwood was suspended from playing or training with Manchester United.

Nike terminated its sponsorship deal with the footballer, while Electronic Arts confirmed his removal from squads on its Fifa 22 game.

Greenwood, of Bowdon, Greater Manchester, had been on bail but was arrested on Saturday. Yesterday he spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

Prosecutor Rebecca Macaulay-Addison said the allegation that Greenwood engaged in controlling or coercive behaviour, related to “monitoring her [the alleged victim] social media accounts and making threats and derogatory comments towards her”.

She added that the alleged actual bodily harm is said to have occurred last December.
