Housing chiefs lose £1m after Awaab’s death
THE HOUSING association shamed after two-year-old Awaab Ishak died from the mould in a damp flat is being stripped of £1million in government funding until they improve.
Awaab, two, died in 2020 from a respiratory condition caused by mould in the Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) flat in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.
Last week a coroner demanded his death be a “defining moment” for the housing sector and RBH’s chief executive Gareth Swarbrick has been fired.
Housing Secretary Michael Gove, who blocked any housing provider breaching standards from new funding, said: “Let this be a warning to other housing providers who are ignoring complaints.”
The Government yesterday also awarded a share of £14million for seven areas with high numbers of poor privately rented homes.
