Look on the bright side

- With Hannah Britt

Vitamin C, the superstar ingredient that brightens skin while protecting it from environmental damage, has been popping up on beauty counters all over the UK.

But why is it such a key beauty must-have and what exactly does it do for skin?

“Vitamin C is an antioxidant, protecting skin cells from damaging free radicals caused by UV exposure,” says aesthetician Shane Cooper (shanecooperuk.com).

“It also inhibits melanin production, the cause of hyperpigmentation and brown spots, and this helps to even out skin tone and enhance radiance.”

And there’s more, as vitamin C can also help treat a variety of inflammatory skin issues.

“It will reduce redness and can help smooth fine lines by plumping and hydrating the skin – something that can be especially useful around the delicate eye area.”

Which product is right for you?

Vitamin C is brilliant at brightening the complexion, but as an ingredient it is unstable. That means if it comes into contact with the elements (when a product is opened, for example), it can oxidise and stop working. “Everyone’s skin is unique, which means it will react differently to products that contain vitamin C,” says Shane.

“Your best bet is to choose one that says its vitamin C is ‘stable’ or ‘stabilised’, as this means it has been scientifically formulated to not lose its efficacy with repeated usage.”

But be aware that vitamin C can irritate sensitive skin types.

“Therefore, beginners should start with a cream containing a low dose before moving on to a more potent serum,” says Shane.

When should you use it?

To begin with, use your vitamin C product every other day to limit irritation before moving to applying it once a day.

“If you don’t notice any redness or irritation, maximum results will be seen from a product used morning and evening – but work your way up to this,” says Shane.

How long before you see results?

“Vitamin C starts working as soon as it is applied to the skin, but it takes around two to three weeks to see visible changes – the full effects won’t be instantaneous,” advises Shane.

“Look for gradual brightening and more even-toned skin – that rested and refreshed look.”
