Tributes to Liverpool legend Johnson

- By Chris McKenna

DAVID JOHNSON grew up a Liverpool fan, began his career at Everton – and was to become a European Cup hero back on the red half of Merseyside.

The former striker died yesterday at the age of 71.

Johnson, who was affectionately known as Doc, made 213 Liverpool appearances and scored 78 goals in his six years with the Reds. Four league titles were his fitting reward, plus the European Cup in 1977, 1978 and 1981 and two League Cups.

He also had two spells at Everton and four years with Ipswich and played eight times for England, scoring six goals.

Kenny Dalglish led the tributes from Kop legends on Twitter: “Sad news about the Doc. David was hugely popular in the dressing room.A really good guy and condolences to all his family.”

David Fairclough wrote: “So sad to hear my great friend and Liverpool legend has passed away. We shared many great moments and memories. RIP Doc.”

John Aldridge wrote: “Gutted to hear my good friend passed away. He was a great bloke and servant to LFC, on and off the pitch. You’ll never walk alone, pal.”
