Fury at TV star’s ‘terribly white’ royals
BRIDGERTON star Adjoa Andoh has come under fire after saying the Buckingham Palace balcony after the Coronation was “terribly white”.
Adjoa, 60, who plays Lady Danbury in the Netflix drama, made the comment during ITV’s coverage on Saturday.
But her words prompted an angry backlash across social media, with some viewers making official complaints to broadcast regulator Ofcom.
One said: “After the racist comment by Adjoa Andoh yesterday, I have now put in my complaint to Ofcom.”
Another wrote: “Was going to let it go but I’m really angry, so thought no, for a change. Things like this need challenging.”
A third posted: “Adjoa Andoh speaks of the ‘terribly white balcony’ at the Palace. They are a white family, for goodness sake! Does she think individual families should be subject to diversity quotas? This race-baiting is hugely divisive. Stop it.”
Another added: “I’m disappointed in Adjoa Andoh. The Coronation focused on promoting positive race relations and representing modern Britain.
“There were many people from diverse backgrounds who had prominent positions yesterday, and yet Adjoa chose to discriminate with her divisive comment.”
Ms Andoh, who is British and had a Ghanaian father, was discussing the Coronation with ITV hosts Tom Bradby and Julie Etchingham when she said: “We have gone from the rich diversity of the Abbey to a terribly white balcony. I am very struck by that.
“I am also looking at those younger generations and thinking, what are the nuances that they will inhabit when they grow?” Video footage of the moment has been viewed millions of times online.
In response, Ms Andoh said: “I was talking about the day and how marvellous it was and then, looking at the balcony at the end, and suddenly going, ‘Oh, it’s so white’, because the day had been so mixed. I didn’t mean to upset anybody.”
