Chambers of Commerce bid to replace scandal-hit CBI

- By Graham Hiscott

THE British Chambers of Commerce yesterday made a pitch to replace the scandal-ridden CBI, claiming it had “credibility”.

The CBI is fighting for its survival in the wake of damning allegations of harassment, sexual misconduct and rape by some members of staff.

Dozens of big companies have either cancelled their CBI membership or suspended dealing with the business lobby group.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said there was now “no point” talking to the CBI.

The controversy has opened the way for other business groups.

The BCC’s director general Shevaun Haviland said: “Let me be upfront and frank, business needs a fresh relationship with Government.”

She said it wanted to “grow and scale our community”.

And without referring directly to the CBI, she said: “We are for every business. A steady hand with credibility on the big challenges.”

To hammer the point home, the BCC – which dates back to 1860 – yesterday launched a national campaign called Where Business Belongs.

Speaking later, Ms Haviland said she felt for CBI workers who risked losing their jobs amid the turmoil.

She explained many CBI members were already part of their local chambers of commerce.

Ms Haviland added: “We have been talking to them about what they might now be missing and how we can help.

“But our starting point is, every business needs their voice represented, particularly now with a general election possibly in a year’s time and that is what we are focusing on.”

The conference came a day after the CBI announced it had hired new executive Elizabeth Wallace to crack down on its toxic culture and implement reforms.

The CBI has suspended most of its operations and promised to come back to members with a plan in June.
