PICKS OF THE DAY

Travel: Grand Tours Of Scotland’s Rivers, BBC2, 7pm

Scottish TV presenter and historian Paul Murton (left) explores the history of the River Nith in Scotland’s south-west – from its source in a remote forest to the sands of the Solway Firth. He also hears the story of the Knockshinnoch mining disaster, in which 116 men were saved from entombment after a massive earth collapse. He also discovers the first man to make a bicycle with pedals and heads to the riverside home of poet Robert Burns.

Documentary: Once Upon A Time In Northern Ireland, BBC2, 9pm

From the makers of Once Upon A Time In Iraq, this five-part series marks the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland. Sharing intimate, unheard testimonies from all sides of the conflict, tonight’s episode begins with a look at how the situation in Northern Ireland in the late 1960s deteriorated from a time of relative peace. As the civil rights movement gained momentum, the Provisional IRA came to the fore resulting in the deployment of the British Army. Soldiers were caught up in violent clashes, leading to the shocking events of Bloody Sunday in Derry, during which Kate Nash (left) lost her brother William.

The real-life cold case drama continues. In tonight’s episode, with the swabbing operation set in motion, Paul is adamant about cornering Sandra Newton’s stepfather – a taxi driver who didn’t have an alibi on the night of the murders. In flashbacks to 1973, Paul is still adamant that the police should be connecting Sandra’s case to the recent murders. With Gareth John Bale, Philip Glenister and Steffan Rhodri (above).
