Man accused of public nuisance at the Derby

- By Jordan Reynolds

A MAN has been remanded in custody for a month accused of causing a public nuisance at the Derby.

Ben Newman denied the charge when he appeared before Guildford magistrates yesterday.

The 32-year-old was filmed running on to the course as the race began in Epsom on Saturday.

He was chased by police who pulled him away as the crowd jeered.

Newman, from Hackney, East London, was one of 39 people arrested over two days.

He was remanded in custody until July 6, when he is due to appear at Guildford Crown Court. On Sunday race organisers praised the Daily

Express for helping thwart protesters bent on disrupting it as police made pre-emptive swoops on suspects.

We exposed Animal Rising’s plot to storm the Surrey racetrack and identified ringleaders. Eleven arrests were the result of dawn raids in Mitcham, South London, and Byfleet, Surrey.

Twelve people were detained at the racecourse, including two women prevented from climbing a fence.

Surrey Police said: “Thirty-one arrests were in connection with planned criminal activity, including two women who were detained moments before they were able to get on the track. Thirty have since been released on bail pending further enquiries.”

Chief Superintendent Clive Davies said: “We absolutely support people’s rights to peacefully protest, but we differentiate between this and unacceptable criminal behaviour.”

Course owner The Jockey Club said: “We remain extremely grateful to the Daily Express for publishing details of Animal Rising’s plans to disrupt the Derby illegally.”

Our undercover reporter infiltrated the group of 70 vegan plotters, an offshoot of Extinction Rebellion, who met at an office shared by Just Stop Oil in East London.

As a result of our intelligence, the Jockey Club won a High Court injunction to ban activity intended to disrupt the festival and spent £150,000 more on extra security.
