Car parking costs flyers 150% extra
AIRPORT parking costs have soared by more than 150 per cent compared with last year.
Data based on 10 major travel hubs found most long and short stay parking is now dearer.
Birmingham Airport rose the most, with a short stay average for four days from Friday to Monday rising from £43.99 to £111.32 – a 153 per cent hike.
In 2022, its average long-stay two week charge was £58.49, but it has risen to £146.66, 151 per cent up on last year.
London Luton Airport’s short stay has surged from £29.32 to £52.88 – an 80 per cent rise – while its long stay offering is now £106.55, 62 per cent more expensive than 2022’s £65.66.
At the UK’s busiest airport London Heathrow, long stay is now 64 per cent more expensive on average, with short stay up by a more modest 14 per cent.
Pricier
Long stay at Leeds Bradford climbed 57 per cent and short stay 66 per cent; Cardiff’s went up by 26 per cent for long stay and 42 per cent short stay; and London Gatwick pushed up long stay by 36 per and short stay by 26 per cent.
Newcastle Airport’s long stay is now on average 29 per cent pricier with short stay up 17 per cent, while long stay is 21 per cent and short stay is 11 per cent pricier at Bristol Airport.
However, at Manchester Airport, two weeks’ parking cost £130.11 last year, but is now £94.10 – a drop of 27 per cent – and short stay for four days is down by 17 per cent, from £64.56 to £53.32.
Prices next month through to April 2024 were compared to 2022’s byYourParkingSpace.
The news comes after the RAC found so-called “kiss and fly” airport drop-off charges are up by nearly a third on last year.
The Complaints Resolver’s Scott Dixon, said: “It can cost more to park a car at the airport than it does for a holiday.”
A spokesman for the Airport Operators Association said parking revenues “support the economic model of the airport”.
