‘I don’t wave a wand to get people into bed’

Hollywood actor Spacey denies being a ‘big sexual bully’

- By Josh Payne

OSCAR-winning star Kevin Spacey denied he was a sexual bully, telling a court he “did not have a power wand I waved in front of people’s faces whenever I wanted someone to go to bed with me”.

The actor, who faces a series of sex offence charges, said the prosecution’s case was“weak”, accusing one alleged victim of being after “money, money and then money”.

Fame

Giving evidence yesterday, Spacey told Southwark Crown Court he could have had sex “all the time” if he wanted but found it hard to trust people because of his fame.

Spacey said he “objected” to the term “crotch grab” that his alleged victims used in accusations against him and denied it was a “trademark” move. He said the claim of an alleged victim he met in a West End theatre in the mid-2000s was “absolute b ******* ”.

Christine Agnew KC, prosecuting, responded: “Because that’s exactly where you did grab him, isn’t it?” Spacey replied “Really?” before turning to the judge to ask: “Did she accuse me of grabbing his b ******* ?”

After being asked by the judge to answer the question, the defendant said: “I did not.”

Spacey denies sex offences concerning four men, including sexual assault and indecent assault, which are alleged to have been committed between 2001 and 2013. Miss Agnew put it to Spacey he was not just a “big flirt” – as he described himself in earlier evidence – but a “big sexual bully”, to which he replied: “That’s your term.” Miss Agnew then suggested to Spacey, artistic director of the Old Vic from 2003 to 2015, that he was “essentially the golden boy of the London theatre scene at the time” and the people he allegedly assaulted would be “unlikely to be believed”. Asked if he considered himself to be a powerful man, the award-winning star of The Usual Suspects and American Beauty said he did not have “a power wand” to force them to have sex with him.

Responding to allegations from an aspiring actor that Spacey “drugged” him and performed a sex act on him while he was asleep in his flat in the late 2000s, the star said: “We were in a romantic situation.

“I don’t know who made the first move but we were consensually together in a romantic situation. He did not fall asleep and I did not perform on him.”

Spacey denies three counts of indecent assault, three counts of sexual assault and one count of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent. He also previously denied four charges of sexual assault and one of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent. The trial continues.
