Richarlison must grasp Spurs nettle

- By John Cross

GUS POYET has urged Richarlison to stop looking for excuses and show he can be Tottenham’s main man.

Former Spurs star Poyet, below, says Richarlison must prove he can fill the hole left by Harry Kane and become prolific.

The Brazil striker scored twice in the 4-1 win over Newcastle on Sunday, taking his tally to four goals in all competitions, one more than he managed all through last season.

It has been a frustrating 18 months for Richarlison since his £60million move from Everton.

“Everyone thought when Kane left that he could be the starting No.9, but it has not happened for him for some reason,” Poyet told NewBettingOffers. co.uk.

“They have decided to play Son Heung-Min up front and have found a better way to win football matches – now Richarlison has a problem.

“You can complain that you don’t play under one coach, then the next coach, but you can’t blame everyone.

“Sometimes you need to take a look at yourself.

“He’s a good player but needs to play in a certain way and I don’t know if he has the right characteristics to play as the No.9 in Ange Postecoglou’s system. If I was the coach, I’d be constantly communicating.

“I’d talk a lot with him about what I need in that position – and what he needs to do more or less to have a better chance of making the starting XI.

“Prior to January, you have to outline the steps he has to take to become part of the team. When you get to January, or the end of the season, you need to make a decision.

“The player will want to play, he doesn’t want to be on the bench.

“It is more on him than it is the coach to find a way to get back into the side.”

After a good start, Spurs’ form has slumped but Poyet says the supporters must stick with the manager and his attacking style.

He added: “Spurs fans 100 percent need to trust the process.

“They have had a tendency to complain about how defensively the team was set up under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

“Now they find themselves with a manager who does the opposite.

“They play so high up the pitch and the fans love it.”
