Sweetest memories

- With TRICIA PHILLIPS

What better way to spoil the family than with a wow-factor pudding to round off an unforgettable Christmas dinner? No need to break the bank, either, as you can find dreamy desserts priced from just £3.99. I’ve put 10 of this year’s supermarket showstoppers to the test to find out which should take centre stage on your festive table.

Frozen Trifle Caked Alaska (720g), £12, Marks & Spencer

Layer upon layer of moreish delights that merge a trifle and baked Alaska into a clever showstopping creation. It had everything – perfect sponge, creamy custard, tart raspberry, a sweet mallow topping, and finished with crunchy almonds.

VERDICT:

Perfection on a plate

SCORE: 10/10

Deluxe Mini Chocolate Fondants (eight), £2.49, Lidl

Diddy, cute things but when you taste them you can see why they are so small. Uber-rich dark chocolate with a runny choc centre. Slightly bitter for me, but dark chocolate fans will like them.

VERDICT: Choc overload SCORE: 7/10

Luxury Caramelised Biscuit Sticky Toffee Star (575g), £7, Iceland

Sticky toffee pud lovers will enjoy this spruced up festive version which comes with a good cinnamon hit, lots of gooey caramel sauce and nice crunchy bits. Cooked in minutes, smelled fab and looked very festive. VERDICT: Great flavours SCORE: 9/10

Passion Fruit Panna Cotta Star (651g), £8, Morrisons

Very creamy but light Madagascan vanilla flavoured panna cotta with a sweet and refreshing passion fruit coulis. Good blend of flavours and not heavy, so easy to squeeze in after the big meal. VERDICT: Smooth as silk SCORE: 8/10

Finest Orange and Mascarpone Highwall Cheesecake (560g), £10, Tesco

Delicious baked cheesecake sits on a snappy ginger digestive biscuit base, with hidden pockets of orange sauce, topped with an orange glaze and bronze dusting. Great to look at and a real treat for the tastebuds.

VERDICT: Light and refreshing SCORE: 8/10

Extra Special Chocolate and Honeycomb Avalanche Dessert (722g), £10, Asda

A delightfully theatrical end to your feast. Simply remove the collar and let the gooey chocolate ganache flow down the salted caramel and honeycomb semifreddo. Crunchy and sweet in just the right places.

VERDICT: Great showstopper
