Death crash fugitive’s selfies from abroad
A FUGITIVE who fled his trial over a friend’s death in a car crash has taunted police with selfies taken overseas, a court heard.
Ewan Corbett failed to appear for his 2022 case, in which he was accused of causing the death of Shane Finn, and has since visited Switzerland, Thailand and Vietnam apparently while using a fake name.
As officers appealed for details of his whereabouts this week, he posted photos of himself posing with a toy gun on Penang Island in Malaysia.
Interpol has issued a red notice for the arrest of Corbett, 25.
He has used his real identity on Facebook to document his time on the run in exotic locations.
One selfie was captioned: “Before I disappear of [sic] the face of the earth”. At a York Crown Court hearing, Timothy Jacobs, prosecuting, told a judge: “He has been moving around South-East Asia, using a false name and paying bribes to get into countries. “There is an Interpol red notice out on him and an EU arrest warrant. However, the [Crown Prosecution Service] are reluctant to commence full extradition proceedings until police can confirm an exact location. “There is ongoing work, and intelligence officers have been looking at his social media accounts to identify a location. The Interpol warning is a step down from a warrant. If he enters any non-EU country regulated by Interpol then they have the option to arrest him, but it is not a requirement.”
North Yorkshire Police said: “Extensive enquiries are ongoing to locate Corbett who is believed to be travelling abroad.”
Corbett, from Middlesbrough, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a licence or insurance following the death of Shane, 21.
The father-of-one was killed when the men’s Audi A3 crashed in the North York Moors National Park in May 2020.
A three-day trial scheduled for September will be held in Corbett’s absence if necessary.
Defence counsel Victoria Lamballe said she had not received any instructions from Corbett and she is likely to withdraw from the case.
Friends of the family of Shane said relatives did not wish to comment.
