Postecoglou picks lots of silverware over pots of cash
ANGE POSTECOGLOU has warned silverware is the only thing that should count at Tottenham, not being the richest club in London.
Spurs were ranked eighth and ahead of capital rivals Arsenal and Chelsea in Deloitte’s Football Money League. But they are set for a 16th season without a trophy following Friday’s FA Cup defeat by holders Manchester City.
Speaking ahead of tonight’s game with Brentford, Spurs manager Postecoglou said: “It helps [the financial situation] and it’s a credit to the club that we got ourselves in that position but that’s not what clubs are measured by, they are measured by other things.”
A changing of the guard could be on the cards with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp set to leave at the end of the season and Pep Guardiola entering the final 18 months of his City deal.
But Postecoglou said: “If that’s your only hope, waiting for the top ones to slip, I just don’t think you get there. They have been very, very dominant teams for quite a while now, but there’s only one way to break that cycle and that is for others to rise to that challenge.”
Postecoglou believes it is unlikely Tottenham will make any more signings in the next two days, while Thomas Frank says he will be happy with Brentford’s transfer window even if the move to sign Antonio Nusa fails to materialise.
The Bees’ move for Nusa, 18, from Club Brugge, has stalled due to complications with the player’s medical.
But head coach Frank said: “I am happy with the transfer window so far.”
Sergio Reguilon, who joined Brentford on loan from Spurs, is unavailable tonight but skipper Christian Norgaard is back after a foot injury.
