Climate of fear has UK running scared

- Ann Widdecombe

IF YOU are afraid, then you are not free. In a free country, citizens go about their business without fear and by that measurement Britain is very, very far from being the free country for which my parents’ generation gave life and limb. Throughout the country in big cities ordinary people, particularly but not exclusively those living on large council estates, are afraid to go out alone once it gets dark.

Members of the Jewish community are terrified of the growing anti-Semitism and shudder away from noisy pro-Palestine demonstrations. Parents are afraid of the impact of social media on their children. People are intimidated into silence by the cancel culture and feel unable to express genuinely held views in workplaces up and down the land. Even MPs do not feel secure in the country they supposedly run.

Above all, in a truly free country, citizens do not fear the state and the police and everyone is equal in the eyes of the law. Yet the same police who stand back while demonstrators beam hatred onto Big Ben will, without hesitation, arrest a single middle-aged woman who is praying in her head within the vicinity of an abortion clinic.

THEY arrest street preachers on no other grounds than that someone is upset by something they have said. They set out to police thought itself. No wonder Christians feel persecuted in a supposedly Christian country.

Men and women are not equal as the police are trained to believe one but not the other. In sexual assault cases men are named while women enjoy anonymity – even if their behaviour is motivated by greed or jealousy. They will not be prosecuted and they know it. Men are called “perpetrators” before any investigation is even under way. As I have pointed out frequently on this page, men are treated abominably by the Child Maintenance Service.

The law allows discrimination in favour of women but not of men as it does in favour of those of ethnic origins but not whites. If you are male, Christian and white diversity will not cover you.We are not all equal.

Fear and inequality are not the foundations of freedom: they are the foundations of serfdom.

God help Britain.
