PICKS OF THE DAY
Current Affairs: Home Invasion: Britain’s Pest Problem – Tonight, ITV1, 8.30pm
The latest investigation from the Tonight team focuses on the stuff of nightmares – the rocketing number of pest infestations across the UK, including mice, rats, cockroaches and bedbugs. With the spread of poisonresistant rodents, and now an average 800-plus pest control call-outs a day, cash-strapped councils and homeowners are finding it harder and harder to contain outbreaks – with a devastating impact on people’s physical and mental health. Journalist Geraint Vincent meets those whose lives have been affected, and professionals in the field, and asks if the problem is getting out of control.
Documentary: Roddy & Margaret: The Affair That Shook The Royals, 5Select, 8pm
An intimate insight into the ultimately doomed love affair between the late Queen’s younger sister Princess Margaret (left) and the baronet and garden designer beau Roderic Llewellyn – who fell for each other while she was still married to the Earl of Snowdon. The scandalous affair made headlines all over the world. Featuring archive footage and interviews with royal experts, authors, and those who knew the couple well.
Drama: The Twelve, ITV1, 9pm
Australian courtroom drama starring Kate Mulvany as Kate Lawson, an artist accused of murdering her teenage niece, and Sam Neill (above, with Mulvany) as her defence barrister Brett Colby. A jury is selected for the case – which has generated sensational and salacious media coverage – and it’s not long before we are wondering how the jury’s own emotional baggage and troubles might impact their verdict.
Film: Trainspotting, Film4, 10.45pm
Darkly humorous drama and box office hit that cemented director Danny Boyle’s reputation, just two years after his first feature film, Shallow Grave, came out. Gritty and sometimes shocking, it stars Ewan McGregor as Mark Renton (above, centre), a young heroin addict living in squalor in an Edinburgh flatshare. Renton seems determined to break away and get clean, but will he be able to outrun his past?
Reality: The Apprentice, BBC1, 9pm
It’s time for some more cringeworthy mishaps, and awkward moments in the boardroom, as the remaining candidates take on Lord Alan Sugar’s next nerve-racking task – in a bid to stay in the running for the ultimate prize of a £250,000 investment in their business. Tonight the teams must choose products to sell on a TV shopping channel – with team members going live on camera to flog those wares to the nation. But which hopeful will be fired by Lord Sugar (right).
