Jesus on mission to give Gunners a Double celebration

- By Jeremy Cross

GABRIEL JESUS is still dreaming of helping Arsenal land an historic Double this season.

Mikel Arteta’s men held champions Manchester City to a goalless draw at the Etihad to remain in the thick of the title race.

Arsenal are two points behind league leaders Liverpool with nine games left – and have also reached the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Gunners have never won the European Cup – and have not been crowned English champions in two decades.

But the Brazil forward said: “It’s the Premier League. It’s a tough league and anything can happen.

“It is only two points the difference [with Liverpool], but we have a very good goal difference.

“Everything counts at the end, and there are still a lot of games.

“We also have the Champions League. This is the most beautiful part of the season, and you try everything to win titles.”

Arsenal were criticised for their negative tactics at the Etihad to frustrate Pep Guardiola’s side, but Jesus says they did what they had to do to avoid defeat on Sunday.

Arsenal were thrashed 4-1 in the same fixture last season, as City charged to a third title on the spin.

Jesus said: “To play big games, you have to sometimes change your body language.

“To go there and play against them is not easy.We tried to win – and I think we could have won it.

“Maybe we played a different game to what we normally do, but sometimes football is like this. Each game is different.

“We went there last season and suffered a lot.We conceded goals and then we made some mistakes.

“This time it was a bit different. We knew from the start that, at some point, we had to suffer a little bit [playing] deep.

“They are a team who love the ball – we do as well – but sometimes it is difficult.”

Jesus was signed from City in a £45million deal in 2022 to score goals – and he has done that.

But he spent most of his time defending against his former club and says he would do whatever is asked of him to help the team succeed.

He added: “The way I am, I try everything I can to help my team. “It doesn’t matter where I play, I always try to do my best – and here, I did it. “I was very deep. Normally, I am not that deep, but I had to play as the winger, and I think I helped my team playing like this.”
