Factual: Liar: The Fake Grooming Scandal, BBC3, 9pm
Documentary investigating the false allegations of rape, grooming and trafficking made in 2020 by 22-yearold Ellie Williams (left) from Barrow-inFurness. Her fictitious claims – that she had suffered physical and sexual assaults at the hands of an Asian grooming gang – went viral on the internet. Thousands called for action and were horrified when Williams was arrested, prompting an angry backlash against local Asian people and the police, even sparking calls for protest rallies. The impact of the false claims was such that the case led in part to creation of new laws, making the spreading of false and harmful information online a crime.
History: Queen Mary: How She Saved The Royals, 5Select, 9pm
Queen Mary (left), Elizabeth II’s grandmother, and Queen Consort to King George V, became a symbol of stability as she navigated such momentous events as the crisis prompted by her eldest son Edward VIII’s abdication. This fascinating documentary, with contributions from historians and royal experts, delves into Queen Mary’s life before her marriage, and explores her continuing influence on the modernday House of Windsor.
Film: On The Waterfront, BBC4, 8pm
Classic US crime drama starring Marlon Brando (above), Rod Steiger and Karl Malden. It won eight Oscars including Best Actor for Brando, who plays former prize fighter Terry Malloy. The boxer now works with his brother Charley at New York’s docks, under the rule of a corrupt union leader. But when a fellow worker is murdered, and Malloy falls in love with the dead man’s sister, he begins to question his loyalties.
Pets: The Dog House, C4, 8pm
It’s a new day at Woodgreen animal charity and time for more matchmaking of pets with possible new owners. We meet boxer cross pup Diesel, who likes to nibble beards, and luckily will have two to choose from, with owners Rob and Andy. Plus, Pippa the terrier (above) and Tasmin from London enjoy a whirlwind romance, while Holly the 11-year-old terrier cross becomes the centre’s latest arrival.
Current Affairs: Priced Out? The Rising Costs Of Your Car – Tonight, ITV1, 8.30pm
The Tonight team tackles another burning issue – this time asking if car ownership is becoming an unaffordable luxury for many people in the UK. Motoring journalist Ginny Buckley investigates what is driving insurance premiums up to record highs. She also explores what is behind the unprecedented rises in fuel and tax costs and tries to find out what, if anything, the average motorist can do to keep their car on the road.
