Knife crime ‘ruining so many lives’ says mother of stabbed footballer

- By Paul Jeeves

THE mother of murdered footballer Cody Fisher said yesterday that knife crime is “ruining so many lives” – and she fears the life sentences for her son’s killers will not act as a deterrent.

Tracey Fisher had felt unable to attend the trial and see Remy Gordon and Kami Carpenter who were jailed for at least 26 and 25 years.

But outside Birmingham Crown Court she said that it had been a “long and harrowing road” to get justice for her “beautiful boy”.

Former Birmingham City academy player Cody, 23, was stabbed in the chest and leg on the dancefloor at the city’s Crane nightclub on Boxing Day 2022.

Supported by Cody’s father Christian, Ms Fisher said while it was a “blessing” his killers were no longer at liberty, she felt sentences for carrying blades needed to be harsher.

She called youngsters who lash out with knives “weak, pathetic cowards. Hopefully this will go some way to try and eradicate this awful epidemic that is ruining so many lives.

“Cody will still not come home and we will forever live in the shadow of his senseless murder...we will continue with our life sentence. Our beautiful boy lost his life to knife crime.”

Gordon, 23, and Carpenter, 22, both of Birmingham, blamed each other for the attack but both were convicted last month. Reegan Anderson, 19, was cleared but was found guilty of affray when Cody’s friend was chased and kicked as he lay defenceless.

The 10-week trial had heard Cody was attacked as “retribution” after he made brief unavoidable physical contact with Gordon while leaving a packed club on Christmas Eve.
