We’re miles better after Bayern test

- PAUL BROWN

MIKEL ARTETA sees Arsenal like a new car that needs a few more miles on the clock.

But he insists they will not choke in the title race after shifting gears against Bayern Munich.

Arteta’s young team went 2-1 down in their Champions League quarter-final against the German giants before rescuing a draw.

And he thinks that will stand them in good stead ahead of Sunday’s clash against Aston Villa. The Arsenal manager, right, said: “It’s like putting miles on a car. If you have more miles, you have more baggage, more experience, and that’s needed.

“There is a lot to learn from the other day and there are a lot of positive things to take away as well.

“Obviously, when we concede two goals the way we did it, affects the team – but it’s what you do afterwards.

“When you are losing 2-1 after being in total control, you have to play that game and you’ve never done it and it’s Bayern Munich.

“The players were exceptional because any other team would collapse. We stayed in the game and were focused.

“We made changes, which had an impact and we got a draw. I will have learnt a lot so it was a great experience to have.”

Arteta joked he will have to have a word with Gabriel and David Raya over their handball mess-up. Bayern fumed after Gabriel picked the ball up at a goal kick but no penalty was given.

Arteta said: “Yes. I think it is worth doing it. Next time, just in case, don’t do it again!

“The law says to use common sense. There isn’t an advantage.”

Arsenal top the table on goal difference, but Manchester City and Liverpool play before them this weekend.
