PICKS OF THE DAY
Factual: Master Crafters: The Next Generation, SkyArts, 10pm
Comedian Bill Bailey (left) is the host for the new season of this very watchable programme, following junior craftspeople as they explore the history and significance of their disciplines, including silversmithing, wood carving and creating stained glass. Each craftsperson is guided by an expert in their field, tonight’s being stained glass expert John Reyntiens, who’s worked on the Elizabeth Tower and Windsor Castle.
Film: Glory, Film4, 9pm
Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington star in this American Civil Ward drama. It’s 1862 and a young Union colonel is put in command of the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry – about to become one of the first units of black soldiers to head into battle. But it’s a fight on more than one front for the recruits, who face difficult training and racism from their own side.
Film: Eddie The Eagle, BBC1, 10.40pm
Taron Egerton (left) and Hugh Jackman star in this not-to-be-missed sports drama, based on the amazing true story of upbeat Team GB Olympic ski-jumper, Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards. As athletes gather for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, they dream of breaking records and winning medals. Not put off by the unsupportive attitude of fellow team members, and the British sporting establishment in general, the eternally positive Eddie is determined to make his mark on the competition. However, for underdog Eddie it will be his triumph over adversities that will win him worldwide fame, and a place in the hearts of many, as he becomes an accidental record holder.
History: Britain’s Lost Battlefields With Rob Bell, 5Select, 6pm
It’s one of the country’s most famous clashes, and the Battle of Hastings in 1066 put an end to Anglo-Saxon rule in England, upturning our culture and language. The story of the conflict was painstakingly captured in the stunning Bayeux Tapestry – including the apparent death of Anglo-Saxon King Harold by an arrow through his eye – but as presenter Rob Bell discovers, the story may not have been that simple.
Food: Andi Oliver’s Fabulous Feasts, BBC2, 8pm
Chef Andi (right) is on her travels of Britain again, meeting new people and helping create delicious feasts for communities. Tonight she’s spending time with artists Rebecca and Anna, who run a community project in a deprived area of Stoke-of-Trent. Andi wants to arrange an arts festival to highlight their achievements, with a Northern Soul themed banquet at the heart of it, cooked up by local gastronomic talent and using local produce.
