PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Animals: Wildlife Rescue, 4Seven, 8pm

This excellent series, which started last week, follows the dedicated team at South Essex Wildlife Hospital as they work to save the lives of sick animals and return them to the wild. While much of the country’s wildlife has adapted to live in towns and cities, there’s a threat to their lives around every street corner. This week, the team rushes to the aid of Rocky, a badger trapped under a fence in Leigh-on-Sea. A nest of orphaned great tit chicks is discovered abandoned in a wall-mounted ashtray on an industrial site, while a fox cub known as Lewis has his head stuck in a rusty wheel before X-rays reveal a problem that could prevent his return to the wild.

Music: David Byrne: BBC Four Sessions, BBC4, 10pm

This concert, from the Union Chapel in Islington, was recorded during a Lazy Eyeball tour stop in London in 2002. This exclusive performance from idiosyncratic and multitalented former Talking Heads frontman and world music guru David Byrne (left), features classic Talking Heads numbers, songs from his solo album Look Into The Eyeball, plus excerpts from opera La Traviata, Cape Verde’s Cesaria Evora and a special version of his hit single X-Press 2, Lazy.

Drama: Beyond Paradise, BBC1, 8pm

Humphrey and Martha’s wedding day arrives, with the lavish affair organised by Anne – whose plans feel far grander than anything either of them actually wanted. Meanwhile, there’s no rest for the Shipton Abbott team members who have to deal with the theft of a valuable museum piece and a nefarious pair of cyber criminals before they can join in the celebrations. Death in Paradise spin-off, with Kris Marshall (above).

Film: Sudden Impact, C5, 10.30pm

This fourth outing for Clint Eastwood’s magnum enforcer, Harry Callahan – and the first directed by Clint himself (above) – has the big man with the big gun hunting a woman who is systematically tracking down and assassinating the men who attacked her and her sister. The San Francisco cop’s unorthodox methods of policing have again incurred the wrath of both his superiors and the city’s mayor.

Arts: Guy Garvey: From The Vaults, Sky Arts, 11pm

The Elbow frontman (right) introduces music clips from the TV archives from 1981, featuring performances by New Order, Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Adam and the Ants, Kirsty MacColl, Kim Wilde and Toyah. Also featured are Elvis Costello And The Attractions, Madness, The Belle Stars, Dave Edmunds with the Stray Cats, and Secret Affair, and there are interviews with the Human League’s Philip Oakey, and Simon Le Bon and John Taylor from Duran Duran.
