Tories in for a Penny are in for a pounding

- Ann Widdecombe

IT’S NOW beyond a joke that the Conservative Party is yet again in a fever of leadership speculation and this time favouring Penny Mordaunt, who is as woke as they come and famous chiefly for being able to hold a sword straight during the coronation. We have known for months that the local elections will be a big dollop of egg on Tory faces, as hardworking councillors pay the high price of the seemingly endless incompetence and civil war at Westminster.

Public frustration and disgust are rightly overflowing and that tide will not be turned before the general election, be it in summer or autumn, no matter who is in Downing Street.

Starmer is heading for a landslide and, given the quality of his own MPs and the virulent disunity between the Blairites and Corbynistas, nothing much will improve. A plague on both their houses.

The Tories will probably be reduced to a rump and the forlorn hope is that the phoenix of true Conservatism will then rise from the ashes. It is far more likely though that what remains will be rent asunder.

That is why I will be supporting the only truly commonsense, tax-cutting, crime-reducing, immigration-controlling party around: Reform UK.

However, back to the Tories and their non-stop leadership fever. Rishi-Washy must surely win any vote of confidence, less because his MPs have any confidence in him than because they haven’t got anyone else in whom they do have confidence. Oh, what a circus, oh, what a show.

I think that when some of those precipitate fools look back in later years, they may wonder just what might have happened if they had stood by Liz Truss.

SHE introduced the only Conservative budget we have seen in years. Initially welcomed, it unravelled at high speed but that was largely due to activities around pension funds on which neither she nor her Chancellor had been briefed.

Yes, she would have had to row back on some aspects and move more slowly but at least she was on the right path.

Now that path has turned into a one-way street to electoral oblivion and all the Tories bother about is who is to lead them down it. Lemmings and cliffs are the words which come to mind.
