Doherty targets a shock

- By Brendan McLoughlin

MATT DOHERTY insists Wolves are ready to play their part in the title race and warned Manchester City: “We’re not in holiday mode.”

The Premier League champions, who host Wolves on Saturday, are bidding to become the first team to win the English top flight four seasons in a row.

But defender Doherty insists 11th-placed Wolves are not already “on the beach” as they aim for a repeat of their win at Molineux against City in September.

Doherty said: “We’ve beaten them already this season, so it’s a game we want to be competitive in and cause a bit of a shock.

“The results haven’t been going for us, but we’re still pushing hard to win the games every time.

“We’re not on holiday mode or anything like that, there’s plenty for us to play for, personally and as a club.”

Doherty admits it was crucial Wolves put their seven-game winless streak behind them and changed the mood around the club by beating Luton last Saturday.

He added: “It was massive for us after no win in seven and we still have aspirations to finish in the top 10.

“You want to send supporters home happy and they’ll feel good about the team going into the City game. The win doesn’t only affect the changing room, it affects the city and the fans.”

Doherty, who arrived last summer from Tottenham for his second stint at Molineux, is enjoying featuring more regularly under manager Gary O’Neil of late.

The full-back added: “It’s what you live for, it’s what you want to do.

“You want to play as much as you can and I’m enjoying it now. I’ve always enjoyed it, but you enjoy it a bit more when you’re playing.”
