Chris Packham’s march to save the natural world
CHRIS Packham is organising a huge demonstration next month to pile pressure on politicians to protect our wildlife.
The TV presenter, who hopes 100,000 people will take part in the march to Parliament Square, London, said: “I’m going to fight for the natural world with everything I have till my dying breath. But I can’t win it alone.
“We must unite around a commonality, a simple love of life, all life.”
So far 116 organisations have pledged to join the Restore Nature Now protest on June 22, including the RSPB, Wildlife Trusts and Extinction Rebellion.
Chris, 63, right, said: “We must all move from our sofas on to the streets in a gathering so huge, so loud, that we are impossible to ignore.
“Those in power, our leaders with their fingers on the precipice of planetary collapse, must hear the demands of ‘love-lifers’ and act on them.
“They must restore nature now, a priority above political point scoring or Westminster short-termism.
This is bigger than the ballot box, than polls and propaganda. This is about our planet’s life support system.”
Research shows the UK is one of the most nature-depleted nations in the world. Nearly one in six species of more than 10,000 assessed is at risk of being lost. Chris said: “I am tortured by the fact this has massively accelerated on my watch. I feel like a failure.
“But I learned long ago that negative energies must be transformed to positive energies, so instead of being maudlin or moping. I’m fighting.”
