Tosin’s free to bolster toon case for defence

- By Simon Bird

NEWCASTLE are pushing through a deal to sign Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo.

The defender is set to become the Magpies’ first summer signing on a free transfer, which will ease the club’s injury crisis at centre-back.

Newcastle have Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman out until November with knee ligament damage.

Adarabioyo will challenge Switzerland’s Fabian Schar for a starting place in the side.

Newcastle have tracked Adarabioyo for years. His contract expiring at Craven Cottage means the Saudi-funded club can use their spending power on a right winger and striker instead.

Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly, a left-sided defender, is also being lured to the North East on a free transfer, while the Toon are also monitoring Crystal Palace and France Under-21 forward Michael Olise.

He would strengthen the right side of their attack should they offload Miguel Almiron to the Saudi Pro League.

Eddie Howe’s men are gunning for a century of goals this season as they face a battle with Manchester United and Chelsea for a spot in Europe.

The Toon, led by star striker Alexander Isak, have racked up 96 goals this season, including 79 in the Premier League – the fourth best total.

Isak has scored 20 league goals and is hoping to be fully fit in time for the trip to Old Trafford tomorrow.

For the first time in 65 years Newcastle scored in every home game of the league season.

England winger Anthony Gordon is fired up for the trip to Old Trafford and Brentford on Sunday. He said: “They are both massive games.

“Getting to Europe is in our hands. We need two results and I’m confident we can [get them]. We’re in good form and have got to go out and deliver.”
