When I was a child I was scared of everything. Balloons, people in masks, clowns – so children’s parties were definitely out, and Disneyland was the depths of hell. These days, it’s only insects and what’s going on in the news that terrify me.

I collect kitchen gadgets. I’m a big foodie and if I see something interesting I’ll get it whether I need it or not. I have special spoons to get poached eggs out of the pan, about eight whisks and goodness knows what else. I can’t help myself.

Ice skating is my favourite sport, hands-down – but only as a spectator! I’m a terrible ice skater, but when I see other people doing it so beautifully I’m in awe. It makes me realise what amazing things the human body is capable of.

My worst job was as a waitress when I was about 16. My boss had a rigid dress code, and one night I turned up in flip-flops and blue nail polish. She said, ‘The best place for you tonight is in the kitchen’ and I spent the night washing dishes!

Kristin Scott Thomas is the most intimidating person I’ve worked with – because she’s my idol. We were both in Salmon Fishing In The Yemen but we only got one scene together, round a dinner table. I was so busy watching her that I forgot my own lines!
