WEDNESDAY
Heaven Can Wait (1943) PG
12.20PM, SKY CLASSICS A delightfully wicked story from the great Ernst Lubitsch, a director well known for his sophisticated comedies. This one stars Don Ameche as the roué discussing his life with the fella downstairs on his way into Hell – sure that his admittance is a mere formality.
Broken Arrow (1950) PG
12.50PM, CH4 Even though Indian leader Cochise was played by a white man (Jeff Chandler), this western still offers a more sympathetic portrayal of the Native American than its contemporaries. James Stewart stars as Tom Jeffords, a man who forges a friendship with the Apache.
American History X (1998) 18
10.05PM, ITV4
Brutal drama with Ed Norton as the neo-Nazi who comes out of prison a reformed man, only to see brother Edward Furlong (above with Norton) heading down the same dangerous path. It’s a standout role for Norton, who earned an Oscar nod for his disturbing turn.
The Ring 2 (2005) 15
12.05AM, BBC1 Hideo Nakata takes the helm for this US remake of his own chilling Japanese horror – which isn’t as hackneyed as the American version was, but is showing signs of wear. Naomi Watts continues her battle against the demonically hirsute Samara.
Wild Bill (2011) 15
12.15AM, SKY PREMIERE Dexter Fletcher rivals old mucker Guy Ritchie with his directing debut – a Ritchie-styled tale set in London’s East End. Charlie CreedMiles is the jailbird freshly released into a grim world, and forced to take some responsibility.
The Ice Storm (1997) 15
2.20AM, CH4 Director Ang Lee gathers an excellent crossgenerational cast for this underrated 1970sset drama. Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline (above) are the neighbours having an affair, while their teenaged children (Christina Ricci and Elijah Wood) start experimenting with sex and drugs. Beautifully observed.
