IN NUMBERS: The Super Bowl
As BBC2 shows this year’s American football championship, Super Bowl XLVII, in its entirety (11pm), we look at some facts and figures connected to the annual gridiron contest…
6 The number of Super Bowl titles this year’s contenders hold between them. Baltimore Ravens have won once in their 17-season history; San Francisco 49ers hold five titles – but then, they’ve been around 50 years longer than the Ravens. 111 million The average number of US viewers who tuned into the 2011 Super Bowl, making it the mostwatched broadcast in US TV history. Among sporting events, only the Champions League final draws a bigger global audience. 1993 The year the halftime show really took off as a musical showcase for stadium-filling acts, with Michael Jackson performing. Since then, the likes of U2, Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones and Madonna have taken to the stage; this year, the star is Beyoncé (right).
540,000 The number of complaints received by the communications watchdog after Janet Jackson’s ‘wardrobe malfunction’ during half-time in 2004, when the singer’s breast was exposed by co-star Justin Timberlake (right with Jackson).
7 The number of Super Bowls hosted by this year’s venue, the Superdome in New Orleans – this will be its first since Hurricane Katrina devastated it and the city in 2005.
£4.75 million The cost of a 60-second advert shown during the game. A 30-second spot costs £2.4 million. More than 47 minutes of adverts were aired last year – that’s big money.
