Connecting towns with highspeed links, it led to the greatest transformation in our history, revolutionising trade, recreation, transportation and communication. In this six-part series, historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Peter Ginn and Alex Langlands raid the dressing-up box again to find out how the age of steam shaped how we live today, bringing railways back to life as they would have been during their glorious heyday.

RHS Tatton Flower Show 2016 7PM, BBC2

The first of two programmes coming from the annual flower show, held in the picturesque setting of Tatton Park, Cheshire. Tonight, Monty Don, Joe Swift and the team shine a light on shade-loving hostas, and show us how to combine colour in the garden to glorious effect. Continues tomorrow at 7pm.

Celebrity Master Chef 8PM, BBC1

Four weeks in, and things really start to heat up tonight, as the first of the semi-finals gets under way. It begins with the toughest challenge faced by the celebs so far as they’re split into two teams, plonked in a tent in a field, and told to create four dishes – meat, fish, vegetarian and dessert – for no fewer than 70 guests. Gulp.

The Refugee Camp: Our Desert Home 9PM, BBC2

Four years ago, a camp was set up in Jordan to house Syrians fleeing civil war. Zaatari was meant to be temporary; it now comprises 24,000 homes, and covers two square miles. In this two-part series, Anita Rani, Dr Javid Abdelmoneim and Ben Timberlake explore this unique, sprawling metropolis.
